Basic Medicare Information

CMS, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, has put together a lot of basic Medicare information, in a user-friendly way. We suggest that you explore the whole site—Medicare.govExternal

If you look at the top, just under The Official U.S. Government Site for People with Medicare, you will see three links — Help, Printable Version, and Mailing List.

  • Help
The Help link leads you to a search engine, a list of subjects, and a link to Site Viewing Tips.
  • Printable Version
In case you want to print information that you find on the page, click on Printable-Version. Then you can print the text, without all of the graphics.
  • Mailing Lists
You can also sign up for one or more mailing list. That way, you will know when there is new information that you are interested in on the Medicare.gov website. There is no charge for any of the lists, and the information will be sent directly to your e-mail address.

Take some time to explore the entire site. Here are some more specific links within the site that you may find helpful.

Your Medicare Summary Notice

This is the notice that you receive once Medicare has paid a claim for your medical services. Here is a link explaining how to read the form.

Preventive Services

UGS and Medicare combine to pay claims when you are sick. We also want to help keep you healthy. To do that, Medicare pays for many preventive services. Coverage information on these benefits are described in the Medicare Preventive Services To Help Keep You Healthy publication on CMS medicare.gov web site.

The preventive services covered by the Medicare program are listed below:

  • Prostate cancer screening
  • Mammography for breast cancer screening
  • Pap test and pelvic examinations (includes a clinical breast exam)
  • Tests for colorectal cancer screening
  • Bone mass measurements
  • Diabetes self-management and blood glucose monitoring
  • Flu and Pneumonia vaccinations
  • Glaucoma screenings

Your doctor can help you determine your need for these preventive screenings.

What can people with Medicare do to help?

The most important thing you can do is read your Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs). These are the notices that you receive any time a claim is paid by Medicare. If you have claims for services that you did not have, report it immediately.
