Instructions for the Calculation of the SNF PPS Per Diems for Urban and Rural Skilled Nursing Facilities

These spreadsheets have been designed to enable the user to quickly calculate their per diem rates under the new Skilled Nursing Prospective Payment System.

Urban - 1st Year for Service Periods 7/1/98 - 9/30/99 Excel Spreadsheet

  • For skilled nursing facilities that are considered urban and are going through the first cost reporting period of the 3 cost reporting period transition phase.
  • Enter the wage index for the skilled nursing facility's MSA, from May 12, 1998 Federal Register, Table 2.I.
  • Enter the Facility Specific Rate for your facility that was determined by the Audit Intermediary.

Urban 100% Federal for Service Periods 7/1/98 - 9/30/99 Excel Spreadsheet

  • For skilled nursing facilities that are considered urban and were determined to be "new" providers for payment under SNF PPS. These facilities will be paid 100% Federal Rates.
  • Enter the wage index for the skilled nursing facility's MSA, from May 12, 1998 Federal Register, Table 2.I.
  • Enter the Facility Specific Rate for your facility that was determined by the Audit Intermediary.

Rural - 1st Year for Service Periods 7/1/98 - 9/30/99 Excel Spreadsheet

  • For skilled nursing facilities that are considered rural and are going through the first cost reporting period of the 3 cost reporting period transition phase.
  • Enter the rural wage index for the state your skilled nursing facility is located in from the May 12, 1998 Federal Register, Table 2.I.
  • Enter the Facility Specific Rate for your facility that was determined by the Audit Intermediary.

  • For skilled nursing facilities that are considered rural and were determined to be "New" providers for payment under SNF PPS. These facilities will be paid 100% Federal Rates.
